How to Photograph and Measure an Old Metal Conveyor Belt Before RFQ

Better replacement inquiries start with better evidence. This guide shows what buyers should photograph and measure before asking for a quote on an old spiral, chain-driven, eye link, flat wire, or plate-link belt.

Why This Matters

A Good RFQ Starts Before the Drawing Exists

Many replacement projects begin without complete drawings. Clear photos and a few practical measurements help JBL Mesh Belt identify belt family, drive route, likely pitch, and the risks that need checking before quotation.

Take one full top view of the whole belt laid flat or rolled with visible overall shape.

Photograph both belt edges so chain, side plates, rods, or welded details can be identified.

Include one close-up of wire, rod, pitch, and mesh opening with a caliper or ruler in frame.

Capture sprockets, shafts, wear strips, and transfer points if the belt is chain-driven or positively driven.

Show damaged zones, broken wires, deformation, or tracking marks if the project is a replacement case.

Measure What Controls Fit

Overall belt width
Chain center distance if the belt has two driven edges
Pitch, rod diameter, and wire diameter
Flight height, side guard height, or plate thickness if applicable
Sprocket tooth count, bore, keyway, and visible wear condition when available

Show the Drive Route

If the belt uses chains, sprockets, or side drive parts, include them. A new belt can still fail early if the old sprocket, chain pitch, or edge route is not reviewed together with the belt.

Mark the Problem Clearly

If the inquiry is urgent because of damage, mark the broken area in the full-belt view and send one extra close-up. That helps engineering separate local wear from a full replacement mismatch.

Common Intake Mistakes

Only sending one small crop without a full-belt reference
Measuring the wrong pitch point or omitting the measurement tool from the photo
Skipping edge photos even though the drive route depends on chain or side structure
Sending blurry damage photos without showing where the damage sits on the full belt

Best Next Step

Send the full-belt photos, edge photos, key dimensions, and drive photos together in one message. That gives JBL Mesh Belt enough context to recommend the next review step, whether the project needs direct replacement, reverse engineering, or trial confirmation.
